Big Smile, Little Cry

You’re just five years old, but you’d think you were grown,

Your confidence could conquer the world,

Yes, you’re big and cool on your first day of school,

And I can’t help wish you wouldn’t grow-up so soon.

I’m so happy but as I’m smiling,

I brush the teardrops falling from my eyes,

Yes, I am smiling as you start to fly,

Big smile, and a little cry.

And now you’re eighteen, tryin’ to look lean and mean,

Still confident and ready for the world,

Yes, you’re big and cool and leaving for school,

And I can’t help wish you didn’t grow-up so soon,

I’m so happy but as I’m smiling,

I brush the teardrops falling from my eyes,

Yes, I am smiling as you start to fly,

Big smile, and a little cry.

There’s an ancient wisdom in a mother’s soul,

To love so hard and then let go.

I’m so proud of you on your wedding day,

You’ve grown into a kind a thoughtful man,

And I watch with wonder as you say I do,

And I make a wish that all your dreams come true,

I’m so happy but as I’m smiling,

I brush the teardrops falling from my eyes,

Yes, I am smiling as you fly,

Big smile, and a little cry.
